Alright, true confessions time. I live my life going between yoga pants and pajamas. There, I said it. I’m addicted to the comfy clothes life and only wear actual attire when forced by the event or occasion. But I am pretty sure you’re just like me- I would bet my entire yoga pant collection on it. Throw in cold temperatures or shorter daylight hours, and the temptation to stay cozy indoors goes through the roof! But the right winter workout wear can make all the difference. When you have the proper clothing to keep you warm, dry, and comfortable, you’re much more likely to get outside, no matter how chilly it gets. Or how tempting staying in pjs all day can get.
Having experimented with various winter workout wear over the years, I’ve discovered some key pieces that not only keep me warm but also let me move freely, perform my best, and stay healthy doing it. Here are some of my favorite winter workout wear, along with a few tips on how to layer and accessorize for maximum comfort during your cold-weather workouts.

Base Layer: The Foundation of Warmth
I cannot say this enough, layering is crucial—and the base layer is the most important part of that equation.
Health Benefits:
The primary job of a base layer is to wick moisture away from your skin, keeping you dry and comfortable as you sweat. As our largest organ, your skin health is essential in overall health. The key here is to avoid cotton, as it holds moisture and can make you feel cold and clammy.
My go-to base layer:
- Merino Wool Tops: Merino wool is incredibly soft, breathable, and naturally moisture-wicking. Unlike synthetic fabrics, merino wool can regulate body temperature, keeping me warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s warmer. Huge bonus: odor-resistant properties! That’s an amazing feature when you’re sweating it out during a workout.
- Synthetic Fabrics: Synthetic fabrics like polyester or nylon also make great base layers, along with being more affordable. These materials are moisture-wicking, lightweight, and durable, making them perfect for high-intensity workouts.
Recommended brands:
- Smartwool: Their merino wool base layers are comfortable and perfect for a variety of activities, including but not limited to mucking out stalls. These are also my go-to for socks-so warm!
- Under Armour: If you’re looking for durability and comfort, these guys are known for their synthetic moisture-wicking base layers.
Mid Layer: Insulating but Not Overheating
Next up: mid-layer. Our mission: to add insulation without making you feel overheated once you start moving. Cause who wants to dive straight into a hot flash the minute your dressed for workout success? Certainly not me!
Health benefits:
The mid-layer should trap heat but also allow you to breathe so that your body temperature stays regulated.
My favorite Mid Layer options:
- Fleece Jackets: Fleece is a great choice for mid-layers because it provides warmth without being bulky. I love fleece jackets for their softness and breathability, and they’re perfect for layering under a windproof jacket. They offer just the right amount of warmth while allowing for flexibility in movement.
- Down or Synthetic Insulated Jackets: If you’re braving extremely cold conditions, a down jacket (or a synthetic version if you prefer a cruelty-free option) works wonders for warmth. I prefer a jacket with a thin, lightweight design so I don’t feel restricted. These jackets are warm, but many come with ventilation options to prevent overheating during a workout.
- Vests or Gilet: Lets layer like the Brits! Vests or gilets are another great option for a mid layer that won’t add extra bulk or heat. Vests also provide more core body coverage in the event you need to play the on/off game with your coat as you get moving.
recommended brands:
- Patagonia: Known for their high-quality fleece and insulated jackets, Patagonia has sustainable options for all your winter workout needs.
- L.L. Bean: Their fleece and insulated jackets are both functional and stylish for outdoor activities in the cold. Such a classic option for winter workout wear.
Outer Layer: Protection from Wind, Rain, and Snow
When it’s snowing, raining, or just windy, the outer layer becomes essential. My winter barn coat gave out on me the other day in pouring cold rain and I had to feed the horses wearing a horse blanket instead. I was freezing!
Health benefits:
Needless to say, a jacket or coat that will protect you from the elements, especially wind and rain, without trapping too much heat inside is a must have. A good outer layer will also be breathable so that you don’t overheat during your workout.
My favorite outer layer:
- Windproof and Waterproof Jackets: I swear by jackets that are both windproof and waterproof for my winter workouts. This keeps me dry and blocks the wind, which can make even a light jog feel freezing. Look for jackets with adjustable hoods, zippered vents for breathability, and reflective details for safety during shorter daylight hours.
- Softshell Jackets: Softshell jackets offer flexibility, water resistance, and warmth without the bulk of a traditional rain jacket. These jackets are perfect for mild to cold weather, providing just the right amount of protection against rain and snow while offering excellent movement.
recommended brands:
- Arc’teryx: Known for their durable and performance-oriented outerwear, Arc’teryx jackets are perfect for intense winter workouts.
- Columbia: Offering great value, their outer layers are both affordable and effective for cold-weather activities.
Leggings and Tights: Comfort and Flexibility
I can’t help myself, leggings and tights are non-negotiable. And they make for an easy transition from yoga mat, to walk around the neighborhood for added motivation to exercise in winter.
health benefits:
They provide flexibility for all types of movement—whether it’s a jog, yoga, or strength training—while keeping you warm in the colder months. Flexibility is important for prevention of injury and soreness.
my favorite leggings and tights:
- Thermal Leggings: In winter, I prefer an insulating lining, like those made with fleece or a brushed interior. These leggings provide warmth without the need for bulky pants, and they’re comfortable enough for running, cycling, or yoga.
- Wind-Resistant Tights: If you’re a runner or brisk walker, opt for tights with wind-resistant panels on the front. These tights help block the cold wind and keep muscles warm without restricting movement.
recommended brands:
- Lululemon: Known for their high-quality active wear, Lululemon offers a variety of thermal leggings that are both stylish and functional.
- Athleta: Another fantastic brand for leggings offering tights made with warm, moisture-wicking materials ideal for winter activities.

Accessories: Protecting Your Extremities
Proper accessories can make all the difference in keeping you comfortable during your winter workouts. And think of how cute accessories make any outfit.
health benefits:
When the temperature drops, it’s essential to protect your extremities—your hands, feet, and head—from the cold. Cold weather can cause dry, cracked skin and your head will quickly get rid of all the warmth your working so hard to keep in.
my favorite accessories:
- Gloves: For running or outdoor workouts, I recommend gloves that are both windproof and breathable. Look for touchscreen-compatible gloves so you don’t have to take them off to check your phone or change your playlist. When it’s really cold, I opt for insulated gloves with a fleece lining for extra warmth.
- Headbands or Beanies: For warmth and comfort, I love wearing a soft fleece-lined headband or beanie. The headband is great for keeping my ears warm while allowing airflow, and the beanie offers more full coverage for really cold days. Some beanies are also moisture-wicking, which helps keep sweat at bay.
- Socks: Wool socks are my go-to for winter workouts. They are warm, breathable, and moisture-wicking, preventing cold, damp feet. I also look for socks with added cushioning to support my feet during high-impact exercises like running or hiking.
recommneded brands:
- REI Co-op: Known for quality outdoor gear, REI’s accessories, like gloves, beanies, and socks, are perfect for winter workouts.
- Smartwool: As mentioned before, their wool socks and accessories are my top choice for staying warm during outdoor activities.
Footwear: Keeping Your Feet Dry and Comfortable
Public service announcement: shoes matter. The right shoes can make all the difference in keeping you safe and comfortable, whether you’re running, hiking, or just walking outside in the snow.
health benefits:
The health benefits of the right footwear could be a post all on it own, so lets just cover the basics. Proper foot attire protects your feet from injury, provides support for you joints, and keep you warm. The kind of show you pick depending greatly on your physical makeup and the types of exercising you’ll be partaking in…maybe I should do a separate post…
my favorite footwear:
- Winter Walking Shoes: I always opt for walking shoes with water resistance and traction. Shoes with a sturdy grip and a waterproof upper keep me from slipping and getting cold, even when I’m walking through snow or slush.
- Insulated Hiking Boots: For outdoor workouts like hiking or snowshoeing, insulated boots with a waterproof design are essential. They provide warmth, support, and stability, especially when the trails are covered in snow or ice.
recommended brands:
- Salomon: Their winter-specific running shoes and hiking boots are known for their durability and performance in cold, wet conditions.
- Merrell: Another great brand for winter footwear, offering a wide range of boots and shoes that are perfect for outdoor winter activities.
